I m a fan of the author s by way of his YouTube channel and was interested in seeing how his work on long form game critiue compares to his written worksI found The Wizard and the Dragon to be pretty enjoyable overall There s uite a few creative choices that I haven t seen much in the other fantasy I ve read the biggest one being that there are only two characters for the majority of the book Compared to something like Game of Thrones which features an index towards the end of the book for looking up characters just to keep track of everybody I found this uite refreshing Bryce and Tower both are engaging characters and I was propelled by desire to learn about them and how the story endsThere are certainly some pacing issues which hurt my impression of the story as a whole A large chunk of the book is to trivialize a bit a trainingschooling seuence set in a single location I wouldn t say I was bored but especially due to the fact that there are only the two characters I found myself wishing they would get on with it at certain points I also found without giving anything away the ending seuence to be interesting if a bit rushed especially by comparison to the earlier chapters of the bookOverall I d recommend The Wizard and the Dragon settling on a low 4 star It s a fun and creative fantasy work that is pretty good about not wasting a ton of time It s refreshing to not immediately commit to a thousand page tome that s part of a series consisting of 7 books to get an entertaining fantasy novel with some good world building

The author's often matter of fact writing style may not appeal to some and the fast paced action seuences feel lacklustre

I'm surprisngly curious about many things like the underground and how the time loop first started Kate kind of came out of nowhere besides trying to set up the trilogy I could say the only moments that dragged was when the author meticulously spend pages describing how the gems work It would be better if all that information wasn't dumped onto the reader

This was just not good There was some potential since the magic system was at least vaguely interesting spells are largely powered by energy drawn from gems However the fact that there are barely any characters and those that are present aren't very interesting hurt this a lot Further the writing is fairly clunky and dragged things down a lot Still I was starting to get into this and then halfway through a rather ridiculous plot twist hap
