characters Detention The Outliers #1

She’s been sentenced to teenage prison for the dumbest reason everWhen Carla Mainston is sentenced to two weeks in juvenile detention for dirtying someone else’s carpet she promises to never break the rules again no matter how stupid they are. I ve read a few books by this author and I can uite honestly say that I ve enjoyed every one of them so far I came across this author while looking for new stories to read and I will continue reading her current and future storiesNow for this story I found it humorous and delightful It is a short read around 60 pages It s a short introduction of sorts to the life of Carla who seems to be the main character for this series She is sarcastic witty smart and let s not forget a knack for getting into trouble She speaks her mind and does what she wants thus leading her to the detention center known as Cleaner s Reformatory for Adolescent Purfication which Carla states CRAP The reason for her stay is that she dirtied someone s carpet When she gets there she discovers that kids are being mistreated by the center She will go the distance to free herself and others even if she has to face The Monster on the fourth floorShe will rally all the kids and needless to say there is a prophesy and she will face the mean grown ups with diabolical yet humorous tactics which leads to the center closingThe world building and the population is very original IMO The people are green though in Carla s case purple and she doesn t know whyand the colony which she lives in is based on being clean The glossary at the end of this short short is a hoot I will certainly look at Mr Clean and AJAX totally different nowI love this author s ability to take a mundane task cleaning and turning it into a story involving kids and their lives in this make believe world It portrays realism but with satire and humor I was laughing myself silly at times just because of the situations that occurred during this story It will remind you of things that you yourself have done to be rebelliousThe main character is very likeable honest with others and herself Though some of her antics are crazy she remains determined Secondary characters were likeable though didn t really contribute a lot through the story but I m hoping as I continue this series they will be involved in the situations being brought forth I found myself rooting for CarlaThe pace and flow of the story was steady for this type of story The author has a created a world that grabbed my attention and curiosity It contains humor crazy antics by a teenager This is a story that I would recommend to all readers who love to laugh and love kids with their own perspectives of dealing with situations that they are given And lastlyI love the book covertitle for this series It fits the storylinescenes within the book I m guilty of judging books by this The book description was outstandingHappy Reading

LsIn an attempt to escape Carla discovers the monster on the fourth floor and uncovers a darker purpose to the institution She will have to fight for her freedom if she wants to go home She will have to break all the rules if she wants to survive. A Great if Brief Start to an Excellent SeriesClaire Chilton has two excellent rebellious teen girl fantasy series OutliersSuishies and Demon Diaries but figuring out which books go where is a challenge I have answered that challenge and am happy to offer a guiding hand Because hey what else are fans forThe OutliersSuishies series features lilac colored loner Carla Mainston and is a bit confused in terms of seuence There are two shorter origins type novellas one is Fallen ueen The other is this Outliers Book 1 and is titled Detention Then the series really kicks in with Outliers Book 2 Legacy originally titled Whatever Became of the Suishies in 2010 and Outliers Book 3 ShatteredSo there you have it The full story to date Now what do we think of this opening book Well I ve read a lot of middle grade and YA fiction and fantasy and I m a big fan of tween heroines But you know an awful lot of the tween ground has been plowed over and over and there s only so much you can do with school family drama boys mean girls and the likeEnter this series that revitalizes the genre as it entertains Carla is a lilac misfit in the colony of the green skinned with a clumsy knack for getting herself into trouble and for attracting unfair punishments She is smart observant good hearted and fundamentally appealing as a character There has been a lot of emphasis in the blurbs and reviews about her being sarcastic but I find her less sarcastic and tart and no nonsense That s great because sarcastic can often drift into snarky andor self pitying and this Carla character has too much self confidence and tenacious style to be just a smart mouth sad sack victimSo not to put too fine an edge on it we have a feisty heroine strong and well defined supporting characters a nice fantasy world rich in metaphorical significance aimed at the understanding of a younger reader a compelling plot and a lot of snappy one liners All wrapped up by an author who obviously has a real fondness for the characters for the world she has created and for the real world How can this be bad
