I will forgive Carolyn Jewel so so much because I really do love her style of writing Her books feel historically accurate even though she gets titles wrong sometimes and they balance description emotion and dialogue very well They're well populated with secondary characters and they usually motor along at a nice pace without too much drama This one is no different And boy can she write steam and sex In giving this 35 stars I am

I have the utmost respect for Carolyn Jewel and and her writing One of her novels Lord Ruin is my most re read romance of all time However her writing in this novella is so overly stylized and obtuse is she trying to be coy and make things mysterious? that some of the interactions between Stoke and Georgina were almost nonsensical and full

4 starsI enjoyed this novella which takes place during a regency house party and regatta called the Dukeries Cup The Duke of Stoke Teversault is a stiff introverted man Georgina Lark is an outgoing widow on friendly terms with Stoke’s brother as well as with his brother’s friendStoke has loved Georgina from afar for years but his taciturn nature makes it difficult for him to communicate that interest to her and he fears that

The duke of Stoke Teversault has well earned his reputation for bloodless calculation Indeed recently widowed Georgina Lark has no idea he’s loved her since before her late husband swept her off her feet Stoke Teversault means to keep it that way The cold and forbidding duke and the blithe and open Georgina could not be less suited in any capacity And yet when. I have the utmost respect for Carolyn Jewel and and her writing One of her novels Lord Ruin is my most re read romance of all time However her writing in this novella is so overly stylized and obtuse is she trying to be coy and make things mysterious that some of the interactions between Stoke and Georgina were almost nonsensical and full of non seuiters I get that Stoke is hiding his feelings from George but why is there a cloud of confusion for the reader tooAnd as for our hero hoo boy There is mysterious and taciturn and then there is just plain weird and cruel which is how Stoke comes across I could not warm to him particularly after he treats Georgina with disrespect rather than express some emotion or even just speak some polite words His disrespect worsens as part of their first sexual encounter in the latter third of the book when he essentially treats her as unmarriageable I was actually happy when Georgina looked like she was rejecting him and leaving him only to be disappointed that they got together And as a result of his weird creepy casual cruelty towards Georgina the resolution of the story and his subseuent declarations of love rang very false and unnatural
