Creed as it moved us about Drivers’ ed made teenagers into citizens; auto repair made boys into menAre We There Yet takes us from muddy tracks to superhighways from horseless buggies to driverless electric vehicles Like any good road trip it’s an adventure so fun you don’t even notice how much you’ve learned along the w. I m not necessarily the target audience for a history of the car in the United States the author fairly early on rhapsodizes about a Saab he formerly owned and periodically returns to his personal emotional responses to various vehicles and national car trends which was all pretty much alien to me I clearly do not fall in the car guy category a gender inclusive identity that Albert celebrates at one point he talks about working on a rusted out truck and explicitly evokes Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance which should be a warning to us all and hearing about his attempts to get his teenage daughter to try driving were I guess sweet but didn t feel very insightful Still other than those passages I largely enjoyed this book Albert s a genial guide and much of the book is about how technologies sometimes capture society s imagination and sometimes fail to catch on through no particular technical failings and how those past fashions determine the subseuent course of events So the book ranges over everything from car styling designs over the decades to the corporate organization of major American automakers to the policy fetish for road building providing something to engage the interest of almost anyone Riverside.
