And Claire Talbot swore to stop any heartbreak before it started – even if that meant tempting away a man who'd grown decidedly appealingClaire Talbot had to be the most exasperating woman in. Ewan Geddes had once set Claire's girlish heart racing But that was back when he was a servant and she the laird's awkward daughter Now he'd returned an upstart fortune hunter bent on her sister. Claire Talbot is a woman who broke the typical mold of a Regency era woman She lives in a man s world undertaking a man s role and responsibilities Most surprising is the fact that she does it so well She has been successful than her father ever was and successful than any other male she since known or met It is not surprising that she would be sought after for the impressive fortune she has managed to accumulate not surprising at all considering her serious lack of those other ualities men find so desirable in a woman Her sister on the other hand has been everything Claire is not beautiful vivacious enchanting and socially elouent Long ago Claire had settled on the decision that she would never marry Why should she She has managed than well enough on her own up to this point If she cannot be wanted and loved for herself it is by far preferable to be the ruler of one s own destiny Her childish girlhood dreams of marriage and family were extinguished long ago when a certain young man ran off never to return No matter that even had he not he only had eyes for her sister Tessa and a sharp tongue with her She had learned to guard her heart and hide her emotions well since that long ago time Ewen had traveled far to come back to the home of his youth after so many years away He was now a man full grown A man who had accomplished the seemingly impossible and turned his fortunes and his destiny He had only one thing on his mind One thing he had yet to attain and the object of his desire was now in his arms twirling around the dance floor in a place he never would have belonged to in his old life He will not walk away this time no matter the possible threats or conseuences that might be hurled his way He had done it once and lived to sorely regret it It had been pure luck to get this second chance at happiness with the one woman he has always been sure should have been his Now if he can only out maneuver that she devil of a sister of hers He was once used to her taunts and insults could even admit she had gotten the better of him a time or two However even her viper of a tongue would not deter him In truth her challenges were once very entertaining and he could admit to looking forward to victory while winning the hand of her sister Highland Rogue although blessed with a romance topic that I adore did not live up to the high hopes I had at reading the title The character depictions were too single dimensional to garner any real interest on my part I felt neutral about them throughout the entire story neither cheering for their success or blissfully praying for their downfall They really left me not caring at all what happened to them or the rest of the story I hate to admit this was one of those rare occasions when I just couldn t wait for the book to end It was not bad enough to leave it unfinished because I so hate to do that but there was than one instance when I seriously thought about it I want characters and a story line that will either garner my love and loyalty pain and heartache or hatred and ire This accomplished none of those things Neutrality euates to blandness A romance without nuances of flavor cannot elicit passion and desire which all romances need in my opinion I can only generously bestow a 2 star rating for this rather dull romance
